Krav Maga Techniques

Posted in Krav Maga by Steve on the December 9th, 2007

When people think of Krav Maga they usually think of the self defense or weapons defense techniques, like defense against gun or knife. As opposed to the fighting techniques, like left, right, right elbow. And for good reason, the Krav Maga weapon defense techniques are really where Krav shines. It was developed by and for the military initially, so that’s where all that good stuff comes from.

Honestly, the Krav weapons defense techniques are why I chose to train in Krav Maga instead of just training in mixed martial arts. Also I really liked the fight program they offer. I’m never going to fight in the ring so a fight program aimed at street fighting is better for me. (I really need to do a blog entry explaining the Krav Maga fight program, but I digress.) Anyway I like that I can go to one place and train in kickboxing, ground fighting and weapons defense. I really look at it like I’m training in MMA for the street.

This video clip is one of my teachers, Jarret Waldman 3rd degree black belt in Krav Maga showing a Krav Maga technique to defend against being choked from behind with a wire. This is an advanced technique; you should know the “headlock from the rear” technique first before trying this one.

… All right guys one more time, slow motion. The danger here is I’m being choked from the rear with either a piano wire or telephone cord, any kind of rope object where someone is trying to take my air.  Slow motion, he’s putting me in this position. I treat it just like headlock from the rear. One side, I’m making my plucking motion, I’m driving going into him. I’m taking away his leverage. Getting out of the hold, striking, finishing, elbows, knees and taking care of business. Again from this angle, watch, he’s crossing his arms behind me, taking my air. I’m going “pluck”. One side, I drive back, I’m creating space. Elbows, knees, hammer fist, I’m finishing the fight. Any questions guys?

I can’t wait to learn this one. I’m still in level 2 and this one seems more advanced.

This is a great technique. The thing about a lot of Krav techniques is you don’t even know you need to know them until you need to know them. Then you better hope you know them.

KravGirl, it is a little advanced but keep training and you’ll get to it.
