Learning Muay Thai Low Roundhouse Kick Instructional

Posted in Martial Art Techniques by Steve on the December 27th, 2007

This is a video clip from a Duke Roufus Muay Thai instructional dvd. I would have to say his dvds are some of the best. Duke is a world champion kickboxer and a trainer of champions. Plus he trained “Shreech” from “Saved by the Bell”, and if he can help that dude he’s a master trainer. Duke was also a color commentator for K-1 in America.

In this clip Duke goes over the proper way to execute the Muay Thai roundhouse kick or as it’s sometimes called the power angle kick.

We use this kick a lot in Krav, especially sparring in the street fighting classes. Roundhouse kick or as we call it “round kick” is part of the Krav Maga level 1 curriculum.

… Now we’re going to address the right low kick and our right leg Muay Thai style kicking. There’s a lot of very important things here we have to address and point out to you. The Thai style kicking is so different then any other martial arts or discipline. We’re kicking with our whole body. You need to get your body working as one.

We’re going to show you how to get your body working as one. Unlike other martial arts we’re not trying to chamber our kicks and snap them out and back. In Muay Thai and kickboxing you don’t kick to your target, you’re trying to kick through, full penetration.

The striking areas on my leg go all the way from the inside of my instep, all the way up my shin bone. Basically I call that “my baseball bat”, that’s what you’re striking with. Any of this area there you can kick that target with, so it’s important. Another important area is the calves. We have to pivot on the toes. We have to push off the toes…

Watch the video he explains how to do the kick from start to finish. I just transcribed the first part of the lesson for you. If you are having a problem doing roundhouse kick you shouldn’t after watching this.
