Self Defense Training in Los Angeles

Posted in Uncategorized by Steve on the January 12th, 2008

This is a video clip of David Bluestein, a 3rd degree Krav Maga black belt, teaching a basic choke from the side defense. David is one of my teachers at Krav Maga Sherman Oaks, which is located in the Los Angeles San Fernando Valley. This is a level 1 Krav Maga technique, so you could learn this in the very first class. But for those who are already training in Krav, you already know this.

David: What’s the danger? The danger is that his hand is to my throat.  However, look, take his thumbs out. Choke. Can he choke me? What’s the danger? Thumbs. I am plucking, sending my hand up as high as I can. Taking my hand and ripping it all the way, boom, through. If I grab and pull, what’s going to happen? Look at Jeremy’s size compared to my size. What do you weigh, Jeremy?

Jeremy: One-ninety.

David: One-ninety, I’m one-sixty. Trust me, he’s stronger. Jeremy grabs on, if I try and pull, all he does is pull harder and harder, and I can’t do anything. So here, instead of pulling using strength, I’m using explosive speed or explosive force against strength, and here boom, plucking off. At the same time, in Krav Maga we’re always doing what? We defend and… attack. It doesn’t do you any good to go here, now what? He attacks me again.  He has me in the pocket… that would be a bad thing. So from here, I’ve learned this so I don’t give him a second chance. I pluck boom, towards the groin. What did you learn tonight? Elbows. Then what? Boom hammer fist.  Then what? Knees. Then I can finish. Again one more time from this side…
