Sherdog Interview with John Hackleman

Posted in Martial Art Techniques, Sport Fighting by Steve on the December 24th, 2007

I know this is an old clip, but if you haven’t seen it it’s new to you, plus it has some good insight into fighting which you should know. It’s an interview with John Hackleman who is Chuck Liddell’s trainer or striking coach, what ever you want to call it. He talks about Chuck getting knocked out by Quentin “Rampage” Jackson.

Hackleman: … He (Chuck) made a mistake, I’m not going to go into it, but he knows what he did and it’s something we go over in training a lot. He saw an opening and he took it and the risk highly outweighed the benefit of that technique and he paid the price, but he’ll be back. He’s a warrior just like Rampage, and he’ll be back.

Sherdog: I mean he went to the body, is that what you’re talking about?

Hackleman: Yeah, from the outside.

Sherdog: You guys don’t normally like going to the body?

Hackleman: No. Never. Not from the outside.

Sherdog: Yeah.

Hackleman: Usually after a combination or after a flurry, but not just a single shot, leading with a body shot. Usually the risk of a body shot like that doesn’t… it outweighs the benefit …

Great fight tip John!

Great clip with some good insight from a top trainer. It goes to show even Pros like Chuck Liddell can even get caught out with something they trained not to do. Sometimes it’s really hard not to take a shot when you see an opening.

Good luck to Chuck this weekend. He’s coming in to the Silva fight with two loses. I hope he has his head straight.
